American actress, comedian, and singer Judy Holliday was born Judith Tuvim on June 21, 1921. New York City was the birthplace of Holliday. She is Abe and Helen Tuvim’s lone child. Her stage name was inspired by the Hebrew word for “holidays,” “yom tovim”.
Before making appearances in plays and musicals on Broadway, she started her career as a member of a nightclub ensemble. Due to her depiction of Billie Dawn in the 1946 stage play, she was chosen for the 1950 film adaptation of Born Yesterday. She received both the Oscar for Best Actress and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy for this performance.
Judy Holliday won the 1960 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for her efforts in the Broadway production of Bells Are Ringing, which was later made into a movie.
